For years, Dave Handley had been dreaming about adding more space to the breakfast nook in the kitchen. Dave and his wife, Chris, attended many area home shows to look at the work of area builders and remodelers before they settled on Tom Gommels and Master Builders, Inc.
“When we met with Tom, he was so personable and easy to talk to, and he had some ideas that we really liked,” said Chris.
“One of the best assets of the Handley’s home is the view they have, and we kept that in mind throughout the project,” said Gommels. “New, larger windows were carefully placed to capture the most natural sunlight and to enhance the open floor plan.”
The goals for this remodel were to 1) open up the living area to expose the breathtaking views,
2) remodel the kitchen, improving layout and function, 3) improve the exterior living space by redoing the deck, screened porch and landscaping, and 4) update other items such as windows and flooring.
Rooms with a view
The addition in the new open kitchen creates a larger dining area. Cherry cabinetry and granite countertops sparkle with the light from windows, which look out to a gorgeous view of the wooded hillside.
Adjacent to the kitchen, the open family room centers on a new fireplace flanked by triple-pane windows that overlook a new deck and a pool that seems to sit on the edge of the hill. In the basement, the recreation room also has a new fireplace. The room opens to a new screened-in porch, complete with motorized screens, on the same level as the newly landscaped entertainment area.
Evolution on every floor
The open concept is apparent on each of the three levels of this home. The original dining room is now office space and a library with room for two to work. The stairway that traverses all three levels is now open (walls removed) to create a brighter descent to the basement rec area. And the third floor master bath, well … fantastic is only one word to describe the feeling in this bright space.
Every floor of this home has evolved to honor the magnificent view. This remodel has taken the same footprint and reclaimed more living space with thoughtful design and improved traffic flows.
For Dave and Chris Handley, the results “exceeded our expectations.”
